Savelli - Regione Calabria
The municipality of Savelli, in the Sila National Park in the province of Crotone, offers a perfect experience of unspoilt nature and scientific discoveries in the heart of the forest.
Savelli is the natural paradise of the Crotone Sila, which hosts the important Astrosavelli Astronomical Park dedicated to Luigi Lilio, a great Calabrian astronomer of the 16th century.
At more than 1,000 metres above sea level, Savelli is located a short distance from the ‘’Pino Grande‘’ resort, one of the most popular destinations for nature lovers and skiers, being an integral part of the ‘’Palumbosila‘’ ski area. The name is a tribute to the Roman noblewoman Carlotta Savelli, who had the merit of granting the land she owned to the evacuees of the 1638 earthquake. Today Savelli is a ‘’slow destination‘’: among its alleys it is possible to appreciate a series of murals that tell its history and to visit the ‘’Mezzocampo Sawmill‘’, in the locality of the same name.
Savelli's pride and joy is Astrosavelli - Lilio Astronomical Park, the extraordinary Observatory-Planetarium named after the famous Calabrian astronomer and mathematician Luigi Lilio (Cirò 1510 - Rome 1574). With a 5-metre diameter dome and a powerful telescope, 60 visitors at a time can peer into the celestial vault seated comfortably in reclining chairs and experience 3D simulations.
Autumn is the perfect time to visit Savelli and taste the prized local Calabrian chestnut and other forest products.
