Roghudi
Among the "ghost villages" of Aspromonte

Naturalistic parks
Regione Calabria
Roghudi is one of the most characteristic villages in the province of Reggio Calabria, on the Ionian coast. The history of the present-day village is intertwined with that of Roghudi Vecchio, the original settlement in a panoramic position overlooking the Amendolea Valley, on the slopes of Aspromonte.
Roghudi Vecchio is now a ghost town where, according to legend, the cries of children who once slipped down the cliff below the houses still echo.
Between "new" and "old" Roghudi lies the tiny hamlet of Ghorìo, which is also uninhabited. These villages once spoke the ancient Greek dialect of Calabria (Grecanico), as can be deduced from the origin of their place names. Chosen as a film set, these small settlements were inhabited from the year 1000 until the 1970s, when they were declared uninhabitable following two severe floods. Since then, the population has settled in the current municipality of Roghudi Nuovo. The area is connected by the Roghudi Pastoral Civilisation Trail, a trekking route that takes you through centuries-old woods, deep gorges and rivers, making it the perfect place for canyoning.
