Petrizzi - Regione Calabria

Petrizzi stands on a panoramic hill overlooking the Costa degli Aranci, halfway between the Gulf of Squillace and the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia, in the province of Catanzaro. One of the narrowest points in the region, the area is a stop on the “Kalabria coast to coast” nature Path.

The town of Petrizzi, overlooking the Beltrame stream, retains the charm of a typical Calabrian village suspended in time, where life flows slowly and it is still possible to hear the stories of past generations.

The name of the town is linked to the traditional working of granite: in fact, the historic centre of Petrizzi is accessed through the ancient Porta 'e Jusu (southern gate) carved in stone. Arranged around the noble palace that now houses the Town Hall, the town offers visitors the opportunity to visit the Mother Church of SS. Pietà, the Church of SS. Trinità, a stately Baroque chapel, and the Church of Provvidenza.

Petrizzi is also a destination on the Augustinian itinerary in Calabria, home to an important monumental complex founded in the 15th century by the Cosenza congregation of the Zumpani: although the ancient Augustinian Convent, now known as “Borgo del Convento”, has become a venue for exclusive events that can be visited by appointment, it still retains some original features such as the porticoed cloister, the monks' spinning room, the church and a chapel. Inside, there was a marble sculpture known as Pietà del Gagini (by Sicilian sculptor Antonello Gagini), donated to the convent by the Diocese of Squillace, which can now be admired in the Mother Church of Addolorata in Soverato (Soverato Superiore), where it was moved.

Visiting Petrizzi in June, during Corpus Domini, offers the opportunity to admire the traditional flower displays that embellish the town centre and the small votive chapels.
