In the Lametino plain, in the province of Catanzaro, lies the town of Nocera Terinese. The name evokes the archaeological remains of the ancient city of Terina, a Croton colony of Magna Graecia.
The present-day town of Nocera Terinese, facing the mouth of the Savuto river and nestled in the valley where the homonymous CDO wine is produced, offers the beauty of its many churches, among which the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista stands out, and some granite portals, such as that of Procida Palace.
The town is famous for the Easter rite of the so-called Vattienti di Nocera Terinese, the earliest records of which date back to the 17th century: the "vattiènti" (flagellants) wear black shirts and shorts, leaving their legs uncovered for the flagellation, which is carried out with two ritual instruments, the thistle and the rose (a cork covered with pieces of glass).
Nocera Terinese is also one of the main centres of production of the Tropea Red Onion PGI Calabria, which finds its ideal habitat in the Lamezia Terme countryside.
