Monasterace
Walking among the remains of ancient Kaulon

Calabria Ionica
Monasterace - Luca Fregola
The historic centre of Monasterace, on the hill overlooking the Ionian coast of Calabria, in the province of Reggio Calabria, is a hamlet perched around its Castle. Among the alleys and panoramic squares, it is possible to discover many small medieval jewels.
Along the Costa dei Gelsomini, Monasterace Marina is home to one of Calabria's most important archaeological parks, the National Archaeological Park of Ancient Kaulon, on the remains of the Greek polis of the same name.
Visiting the archaeological park of Monasterace is a unique experience: walking among the ruins, you can admire the urban quarters and the baths, including the magnificent rooms that have yielded large mosaics depicting dragons and dolphins. To see the main finds discovered during excavations, simply visit the nearby National Archaeological Museum, at the foot of the promontory on which the Punta Stilo Lighthouse stands.
Discovering the historical centre of Monasterace during religious festivals and during ethno-musical festivals is a pleasant and original way to experience the village's identity in all seasons, surrounded by the aristocratic palace that encompasses the ancient remains of the Monasterace Castle, with its central courtyard and dozens of rooms, and the churches, starting with the Mother Church.
