Calabria Ionica
The historic centre of Monasterace, on the hill overlooking the Ionian coast of Calabria, in the province of Reggio Calabria, is a hamlet perched around its Castle, today's palace built around a central courtyard with dozens of rooms still inhabited. Among the alleys and panoramic squares, it is possible to discover many small medieval jewels, as well as churches, among which the Mother Church stands out.
Along the coast, Monasterace Marina is home to one of Calabria's most important archaeological parks, the National Archaeological Park of Ancient Kaulon, on the remains of the Greek polis of the same name. Here it is possible to admire the urban quarters and thermal baths, including the magnificent rooms that have yielded large mosaics depicting dragons and dolphins. To admire the main finds discovered during excavations, simply visit the nearby Archaeological Museum.
Visiting Monasterace during the numerous religious festivals and during the ethno-musical festivals is a pleasant and original way to discover the village's identity in all seasons.
