Molochio
Molochio, among mauve flowers and spectacular waterfalls in the heart of Aspromonte

Town
Molochio - Andrea Sergi
There is something very fascinating about the name of this ancient village nestled in the heart of the Aspromonte National Park.
In fact, Molochio derives from the Greek word molokìon, because mallow flowers have always characterised an area blessed by lush and still unspoilt nature. Mallow, but not only: olives, figs, chestnut trees envelop the land that the Basilian monks, already in the 10th century, chose to build their Shrine when they arrived from Sicily.
Visiting Molochio is like taking a trip back in time: the historical centre will welcome you, showing traces of a past strongly linked to Christianity: the Church of Santa Maria, the small Church of San Vito, the Shrine of the Madonna di Lourdes. Characteristic are the Camillo and Bernardo fountains with large sculptures of two young mythological heroes.
Near the town, it is possible to visit two of the most impressive waterfalls in the Aspromonte National Park, one of which reaches a height of 40 metres.
