Malvito
The village of "malva" in the Esaro Valley

Historical centres
Malvito - Regione Calabria
Its name, Malvito, derives from "malvetum", the Latin term for mallow, referring to the abundance of this aromatic herb in the area. A place of great scenic beauty in the upper Esaro Valley, in the province of Cosenza.
Malvito is famous for its imposing Lombard-Norman Castle, with its unmistakable circular tower, a symbol of a history that unfolds as you walk through the village, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
The town of Malvito is built around a medieval castle, an architectural symbol and important landmark among Calabrian castles, linked to the figure of Robert of Altavilla, known as "Il Guiscardo". The remains of the surrounding walls also date back to the medieval period. Not to be missed? The 17th-century oratory of the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, long the seat of the bishopric, and Palazzo Ariani, which today houses the Town Hall but was once the residence of the Ariani counts, who arrived in Malvito from Naples in 1847.
Visitors to Malvito can enjoy a walk in the Valley of the Mills on the banks of the Esaro River, discovering the ancient rural buildings that characterise this fertile area, historically devoted to agriculture. Examples of medieval water mills can still be admired along the Crispo and Fontanelle streams, many of which are in good condition and set in a natural landscape of incomparable beauty.
