Firmo - Regione Calabria

A mountain village in the province of Cosenza, in the Pollino National Park, Firmo preserves its Arbëreshë (Italo-Albanian) tradition in its language, Greek-Byzantine rites and traditional customs.

Before the arrival of the Albanians, the ancient territory of Firmo was divided into two respective hamlets: "Soprano" and "Sottano", the latter being a fiefdom of the Dominican fathers who welcomed refugees from the Balkans fleeing Turkish persecution. Even today, the Dominican Convent (ka këllogjeri) represents the historical reference point for the birth of the town, together with the Museum of Arbëreshë Arts and Traditions, which is definitely worth a visit.

Other recommended places to visit are the 17th-century Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its bell tower with an octagonal cell with a spire, the Chapel of the Madonna di Aprile, dedicated to Greek-Byzantine religious services and folkloric events in the spring months, such as the spectacular traditional dances known as 'Vallje', and the Church of St John Chrysostom, built in the late 1970s.
