Ferruzzano
A terrace on the Costa dei Gelsomini

Historical centres
Regione Calabria
The view from the historic centre of Ferruzzano (or Ferruzzano Superiore), in the province of Reggio Calabria, has earned it the nickname "terrace" on the Costa dei Gelsomini.
From the hilltop village, particularly from the top of the charming hamlet of Saccuti (also known as Ferruzzano Vecchio), where time seems to stand still, you can enjoy an enchanting view of Marina di Ferruzzano and the entire Ionian coast of Reggio Calabria.
Built around the second half of the 15th century, the historic centre of Ferruzzano (also known as Ferruzzano Superiore), like many other seaside towns of Greek origin, owes its hilltop location to the constant raids by Saracen pirates. These events gave rise to the three different hamlets that make up the municipal territory: Marina di Ferruzzano, one of the most popular seaside resorts in the area, located in the Costa dei Gelsomini Regional Marine Park, an oasis for numerous protected species (such as the Caretta Caretta turtle); the current town of Ferruzzano Superiore, with its rural itinerary to discover the ancient wine presses of Ferruzzano; the abandoned village of Saccuti (or Ferruzzano Vecchio), a significant testimony to the most ancient past, with its narrow streets and the remains of houses abandoned after earthquakes.
