Decollatura
The village of the poet Michele Pane, at the foot of Mount Reventino
Town
Regione Calabria
Decollatura extends along the eastern slopes of Mount Reventino, in the province of Catanzaro. Divided into small hamlets, the ancient Casali Catanzaresi, Decollatura is the village of the poet Michele Pane.
Famous for the production of Soppressata di Decollatura (PAT certified) and Sila Potato PGI, the area has always been dedicated to agricultural and pastoral activities of excellence.
Decollatura lies along the course of the Amato River, the ancient Lametus, which flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea on the Riviera dei Tramonti. Among the places to visit in the historic centre are the 17th-century Mother Church of San Bernardo and the churches of Monte Carmelo, Santissima Assunta and Addolorata. A short walk from the Mother Church is the 16th-century Bishop's Palace (or Seminary) and an ancient warehouse for storing grain, which now houses a religious community.
The Reventino woods are the main resource of Decollatura, which for centuries has lived off timber and undergrowth products, as well as the more recent cultivation of the Sila Potato, to which an important village festival is dedicated every year, and the production of Soppressata di Decollatura, one of the Traditional Agri-Food Products. Among the small scattered hamlets, Adami was the birthplace of the so-called Rebel of Reventino poet, Michele Pane, one of the Calabrian intellectuals who emigrated and became naturalised in Chicago, where he founded the magazine Il Lupo and composed most of his works in dialect.
