Gallicianò, Condofuri - Regione Calabria

There is a village in Calabria where you might happen to hear a very ancient and unknown language. It is a village nestled in the green Aspromonte mountains, overlooking a valley crossed by a fiumara river and has the scent of bergamot and the sound of the tarantella in the air.

If you want to visit a place that seems out of time and get to know the authentic soul of this region and its Magna Graecia essence, you must come to Condofuri, in the province of Reggio Calabria. The Amendolea river is certainly one of the peculiarities of this territory, its name recalling the almond trees that must have been present in this area. The Amendolea originates in the heart of the Aspromonte National Park, runs for 31 km, also creating many suggestive waterfalls, and then flows into the Ionian Sea.

Condofuri is a municipality in the Greek linguistic-geographical area, a niche in which a language closely related to ancient Greek is spoken and written. The inhabitants continue to speak it and teach it to children, to preserve it and prevent it from disappearing.

Passing through the village, a sometimes very steep road leads you to the ruins of an ancient Norman castle. From here, you will have a breathtakingly beautiful panorama and the fiumara river will appear to you as if set in the green of the citrus groves, while a few kilometres away you will be able to see the blue of the sea. In fact, Condofuri has an old town centre up high, but also a seaside area with a beautiful, wild beach washed by a crystal-clear sea. We recommend a walk in the hamlet of Gallicianò to visit the Orthodox Church of Panaghìa tis Elladas, or the Madonna of the Greeks.

If Condofuri were a perfume, it would certainly be that of bergamot, which you will find in the form of jams and powders, because the trees of this precious citrus fruit grow strong and luxuriant here and its essence will certainly be your travel memory.
