Cleto - Regione Calabria

The historic centre of Cleto, in the province of Cosenza, is a veritable defensive stronghold overlooking the Savuto Valley, Calabria's second most important river after the Crati. This is demonstrated by the presence of two different castles, sentinels of a territory that has been coveted since ancient times.

The Castle of Savuto (or Sabuci, in the hamlet of the same name), not coincidentally known as the "Guardian of the Savuto River" from the Angevin era, and the Castle of Pietramala (from the ancient name of the village) at the top of the historic centre, a perfectly restored building of Byzantine-Norman origin in a panoramic position.

Among the medieval castles of Calabria worth visiting, the two fortresses also host important events throughout the year, in particular the "Cleto Festival", one of the region's most popular summer music and folklore events. The history of the feudal lords of Pietramala spans centuries and is evident in the monumental entrances to the village, consisting of the four ancient gates, among the streets and buildings of the historic centre of Cleto, as well as in the ruins of its two castles.

Don't miss a visit to the churches, starting with the 16th-century Mother Church, dedicated to the Assumption, passing by the 17th-century Church of the Consolazione, with its unmistakable yellow and green majolica dome, and the SS. Rosario, reduced to ruins by the terrible earthquake of 1908. Another symbol of the historic centre of Cleto is the Cece Fountain, in the archaeological area of Pantano, where there is a small necropolis, a starting point for nature excursions in the surrounding area.
