Town

Cerzeto - Regione Calabria

As its name indicates, Cerzeto is the ancient place where oak forests abounded. Today, this small town in the province of Cosenza is an important point of reference for Italo-Albanian culture in Calabria.

A stage along the Way of St Francis of Paola, in the variant known as the ‘’Way of the Young Man‘’, Cerzeto is immersed in centuries-old woods of rare beauty, with monumental, soaring trees.

In the woods of Cerzeto, the faithful stop in prayer in front of the enchanting San Francesco Beech, next to which is a small chapel housing the statue of the patron saint of Calabria.

Founded in 1478 by groups of Albanian families who had taken refuge in Italy, Cerzeto is the custodian of ancient rites and traditions of Italo-Albanian culture: Albanian wedding costumes, worn by women on special occasions and festivities, are still preserved here; the language and the Greek-Byzantine religious rite are still practised. Among the most important events in Cerzeto are Carnival and the feast of the patron saint, St Nicholas of Myra.
