Castello Giannone, Calopezzati - Regione Calabria
The municipality of Calopezzati, in the province of Cosenza, consists of two urban centres: Calopezzati, with its historic centre on a panoramic hill overlooking the Ionian Sea, and Calopezzati Marina, the seaside resort along the coast.
The symbols par excellence of Calopezzati are the imposing Norman Castle (also known as Castello Giannone, named after its current owners) and the splendid beach, which is a favourite destination for tourists in the summer.
Visiting Calopezzati means immersing yourself in an experience that combines sea, history and traditions. The historic centre on the hill shows traces of the original Byzantine settlement which, over the centuries, has seen the Normans, Angevins, Swabians and local feudal lords come and go. A section of the city walls and, above all, the majestic Giannone Castle remain from the ancient medieval settlement. The castle is a quadrangular fortress with warehouses and storage rooms, which has been transformed from a military lookout post in a strategic position into a veritable stately residence, one of the best-preserved castles in Calabria. The splendid 15th-century Baroque Library is still located inside, together with various original furnishings and fittings.
Other noteworthy buildings in the historic centre of Calopezzati are the churches: the Church of the Assumption (16th-17th century), the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, which houses several noble tombs, and the small church of Our Lady of Grace. The seaside hamlet of Calopezzati is one of the most popular seaside resorts for tourists during the summer.
